Tilapia is the name for a very large group (or species) of fish. These types of fish prefer a fresh water environment and will often be found in rivers, streams and lakes. They are a very important fish in several nations and are a popular form of food. The Tilapia fish themselves will not live and breed in cooler waters, however will produce many offspring in warmer water.

Tilapias are known by many other names across the globe. Genus is a popular name given by a European zoologist who studied the fish. In one bible verse the fish is mentioned so the name St Peter’s Fish was given due to his relevance in the story.

Because the fish grow to a very large size and reproduce at a very fast rate the Tilapia fish has become a very important part of the fish farming culture. Each year millions of tons of the fish are farmed and sold as fresh and frozen fish all over the world. The fish itself is a very rich source of protein which is needed by humans for development and muscle growth.

More commonly grown is African regions (due to the hot climate), the fish is now beginning to be farmed in tropical regions of Asia and is having more success and global warming heats the seas more and more. Chine in fact is the world’s largest farmer of the fish and it is becoming a staple for its growing population.

The fish is commonly skinned and then bones removed to prepare it for serving. This process will generally leave 40% of the fish’s initial weight intact for human consumption. The fish itself lives on a diet of natural plants found in its environment. If placed in a pond with common household fish, as they do not compete with the other fish for food and actually clean the pond out, it improves the size and health of the other fish.

Tilapias are a very popular food because they contain very low levels of mercury (due to their mainly vegetarian diet). They contain very low amounts of carbohydrates, fat and salt which make them a great food for dieting (especially considering their high protein content). The fish also contains the good fatty acids which are proven to help with your heart health, brain activity as well as the brain itself.
